ASFA welcomes Women’s Economic Security Statement 2018
The Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA) welcomes the release today by the Minister for Jobs and Industrial Relations and Minister for Women, Kelly O’Dwyer, of the Women’s Economic Security Statement 2018.
ASFA CEO Dr Martin Fahy said the decision to extend the early release of superannuation to circumstances of domestic and family violence recognised that the ability to leave a situation of domestic violence can be a matter of life or death.
“Domestic and family violence is the principal cause of homelessness for women and their children. Often, physical violence is accompanied by financial abuse, which can make it difficult for a partner to leave the relationship. On this basis we have advocated for extending early release of superannuation to circumstances of domestic violence.”
ASFA also welcomes improving the visibility of superannuation assets in family law proceedings.
“We support the development of tools that assist parties to create super splitting orders, including a tool to look up the legal name and contact details of super funds,” said Dr Fahy.
ASFA will work closely with the Government as it works to implement these important reforms to superannuation.
