Statement on ATO warning on fake news about superannuation changes

The Australian Tax Office has issued a warning regarding dodgy websites sharing fake news reports about changes to the superannuation preservation rules and withdrawal rules starting on 1 June.

Deputy Commissioner Emma Rosenzweig has confirmed the maximum preservation age (when superannuation savings can be accessed on retirement) is 60 for anyone born from 1 July 1964.

On 1 July this year two superannuation changes come into effect: an increase in the Superannuation Guarantee to 12%, and the accrual of superannuation entitlements while taking Government Paid Parental Leave.

The ATO is reminding consumers to check the legitimacy of the superannuation information they receive.

ASFA encourages superannuation account members to seek information from trusted sources, such as their super fund website or at www.ato.gov.au.
