Statement from ASFA CEO: Coalition tells Australian women that if they take parental leave, they’ll be left behind in retirement

In response to media release issued by Sussan Ley MP, Angus Taylor MP, Michael Sukkar MP:

“Parental leave is the only commonly taken form of leave that doesn’t attract superannuation.

“With this proposal the Coalition is continuing to say to Australian women that their time out of the workforce doesn’t matter. Changes like those proposed put paid parental leave on a lower level than all other forms of leave and sends a poor message — if you take time out of the workforce to raise a child, you will be left behind in retirement.

“Everyone agrees that taking action on the cost of living is important, but doing so at the expense of retirement is a short-sighted decision.

“Instead of asking women to choose, we believe the Opposition should engage constructively to build women’s financial independence in retirement. This proposal does the opposite.”
