Voice to Parliament – ASFA Statement

In May 2017, over 250 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander delegates gathered at Uluru and placed their signatures on an historic statement addressed to the nation.

This statement was the Uluru Statement from the Heart. The Statement invites the Australian people to create a better future through the proposal of key reforms.

One of these reforms is a call for the establishment of a First Nations Voice, to be enshrined in the Australian Constitution (Voice). A historic referendum to enact this call for a Voice to Parliament is planned between October and December 2023.

The Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia (ASFA) encourages members of the superannuation community to engage with and inform themselves about the forthcoming referendum on the Voice to Parliament.

In the context of superannuation, it is important to note that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women have significantly lower rates of superannuation and lower average and median balances than the overall Australian population.

There are many sources of information with respect to the Voice to Parliament that we recommend members of the superannuation community access and consider these carefully.
