Stephen McGown is the longest held surviving Al Qaeda hostage in the world.
He views himself as a normal person and says that if he was able to get through this, then everybody can overcome their challenges: “We all have what is needed to overcome adversity within us.”
Stephen learned many amazing things while in captivity and made the most of his time in the Sahara. He feels he emerged a better person with many unusual stories, deciding that “if they weren’t going to kill me, I should use this time to grow and go home a better person back to my family”.
A passionate believer that life is to be lived and should be enjoyed, Stephen wants people to understand that life should not be taken too seriously and that there is always a place to smile and laugh – as this is what keeps us going.
