ASFA recognises that a sound educational basis is crucial for a professional in a knowledge industry.

A formal qualification relevant to superannuation is a prerequisite for anyone wishing to obtain Associate or Fellow status.

As there is a growing range of tertiary education courses undertaken by professionals in the superannuation industry, the following list is not exhaustive but is an indication of the level required.

Minimum education requirements for Fellow status

One of more of the following:

• Advanced Diploma of Financial Services (Superannuation)
  
  
• ASFA Diploma of Superannuation Management (ASFA qualification previously available)
  
  
• Bachelors qualification with a superannuation major and listed on ASIC’s Register of compliant courses for RG146 in superannuation
  
  
• Graduate Diploma or Masters Degree listed on ASIC’s Register of compliant courses for RG146 in superannuation
  
  
• Actuary who has completed Part III of Institute of Actuary’s Program
  
  
• Recognised accountant who has completed courses listed on ASIC’s Register of compliant courses for RG146 in superannuation
  
  
• Lawyer who has completed formal training relevant to superannuation

Minimum education requirements for Associate status

One or more of:

• Diploma of Financial Services (Superannuation) or Diploma of Financial Services (Financial Planning)
  
  
• Graduate Certificate listed on ASIC’s Register of compliant courses for RG146 in superannuation
  
  
• Relevant higher qualification (see Fellow).

The Education and Professional Recognition Committee (EPARC) will consider relevant alternative options.

However, members must be able to clearly demonstrate that their professional development activities during their time in the industry have been focused on and directed towards improving both their professional practice and their professional standing.
