ASFA Policy Principles
Download: ASFA Policy Principles June 2008
As the peak industry body for superannuation, ASFA has developed policy positions on a range of issues since its inception in 1961. The pace of policy development increased in the last ten years with the huge changes in superannuation and in the Australian retirement income system more generally. In proposing, championing, or responding to these changes ASFA’s policy positions have grown in breadth and depth.
The “Blue Skies” document, ASFA’s blueprint for a National Retirement Income Policy released in June 1998, stimulated wider debate in industry and government and heralded a focus on the end goal: adequate and sustainable retirement incomes for Australians. ASFA has clearly articulated the criteria against which the Association will evaluate policy initiatives from government and industry as we strive towards this outcome.
The compilation of ASFA policy positions was reviewed by the Policy Committee in the first half of 2005 to extend, update and amend policy where relevant and to identify and address a range of new issues.
The draft document was then placed on the ASFA website during July and ASFA members were invited to comment. Following receipt of comments, the Policy Committee further reviewed the policies.
At the 13 September 2005 Board Meeting, the ASFA Board approved the document, ASFA Policy Principles.
Following changes to the Australian retirement income system the Board has updated the principles and approved a number of amendments.
ASFA’s Policy Principles provide principles, and necessary guidance, so that ASFA can participate in current and future debates in a timely fashion.
