smoothing
Definition
adjusting investment returns to enable less volatile crediting rates for member accounts. Operates by building up investment reserves (in some years crediting amounts to member accounts which are less than earned rates of return) and drawing on these reserves in other years to allow returns to be credited which are higher than the earned rates.
